Work Experience (Most Recent First)
November 05 - Present:
I am currently working for Wombat Financial Software in Belfast as team leader
of the Build and Release (QA) team which comprises of 3 members at present. I am responsible for looking after the build scripts which
need to work completely cross-platform from Linux to Solaris to Windows. All Linux scripts are centered around bash scripting and all
windows scripts revolve around batch scripting, though both of them call a combination of perl and python scripts to do their bidding.
I am also author of the primary php application (which plugs into egroupware) which handles all our releases and nightly builds.
As team leader, I delegate the jobs in my team in such a way that I try to encourage knowledge sharing whilst maintaining the high level
of QA that out customers have come to expect. Our team is very closely knit and we serve as the primary build/environment/administration
knowledge base for the company. We constantly liaise with the rest of the company on various issues and we are on the customer service
front line - dealing directly and daily with our customers who are primarily administrators for investment banks. All of our team work
well together and seem to enjoy working as a unit to deliver tough targets.
July 04 - Sept 05:
I worked with BT Exact in Belfast for my industrial placement year. Throughout
my work here, I have worked as part of a closely knit Technical Support team for the staff within the building. My experience here
ranges from rebuilding the operating systems to intricate hardware repairs on faulty Laptops. I have met countless new people and I
have solved numerous problems in a whole range of areas – most of which I had never encountered before my work here. My programming
skills and Linux knowledge have also improved significantly. Evidence of this includes setting up a training room which boots entirely
off a network using PXE, scripting a series of batch files which allow lots of different DOS formatting/partitioning tools to load
easily with a user friendly interface and migrating data from our old flat-file based ticketing system to our new MySQL based system
using Perl scripting and SQL queries. The work also included constant phone support and e-mail support throughout the year to over
300 employees.
Since 2002:
Upgrading and Repairing all sorts of PC and Laptop problems including installation
problems, hardware issues, compatibility issues and a whole wealth of other problems. This work is self-employed and leads me into
all sorts of challenging situations. I am a natural problem solver so this kind of work comes naturally to me, and I find it very
enjoyable and rewarding. I have also undertaken some contract-based projects via rentacoder.com and the various entrepreneurs I have
met through the site. Work includes Perl programming, Linux administration and php programming.
Interests
I enjoy meeting new people, films, DIY, cycling, playing sports and designing websites. My biggest website at the moment is
http://www.snesreviews.co.uk and is a LAMP-based system.
