Game: Street Fighter Alpha 2 | Developers: Capcom | Year: 1996 | Maximum No. Players: 2
It all ends here - all the criticism of Capcom and their regurgitating of, essentially, the same game repeatedly. Make no mistake - this is a proper sequel and it looks amazing (not to mention completely made over since its predecessors). Everything now has a cartoony feel to it - even bison now looks an evil kind of cuddly now! Characters can also seem bloody huge on screen and david versus goliath encounters may be all too frequent! You have the choice between normal and turbo (as if you need it) in the game selection screen as well as an auto-guard thingy but it has to be said that can become more of a nuisance than anything unless you're migrating from a different style of fighting game.
It has to be said that the main benefactor to this game is the death-inducing super moves - especially if you use one to snap victory from the jaws of defeat. As well as helping you feel all smug about yourself, you also get a nice big glowy background after the finish as well as some nice slow motion. Aha - take that!
You have different attack levels, indicated by your energy bar at the bottom of the screen. If you are at or past the 1, you can do stage 1 attack which will use up one unit of your power bar, or you can do a stage 3 move which usually looks spectacular but you can also leave yourself wide open for a counter-attack.
Everything seems to go in this release - you can block attacks in mid air, combos have been properly implimented (although the Street Fighter series was never really a combo-based game as such), you can do special moves such as the hurricane kick in mid-air, and you can even land on your feet when you're thrown - everything in this game is superb! Akuma is unarguably the coolest looking evil ginger bad guy in the history of video games, the graphics are beautiful, the sound is brilliant - this is one of the all-time great video games!
Graphics
10/10
Some of the best I've seen on the SNES - everything looks intentionally cartoony and the super moves look great!
Difficulty
8/10
Quite difficult but not the worst I've ever seen. Every player's one-player story makes for not too long a gamei.e. you don't have to fight everybody else!
Sound
9/10
Very arcadey - And a great improvement over all successors to the original - the voice makes it feel like you're playing an arcade game!
Playability
10/10
Well it doesn't come any better than this - It's the last street fighter game made for the snes and it shines as being by far the greatest! There's so much variation!

This is what people have said about this game/review:
Posted by: 3-Eyed Gamer on November 13, 2007, 11:49 pm It must be said that for whatever reason Capcom decided to port over this excellent continuation in the Street Fighter universe, it was not to showcase the lasting power of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Yet what they have done, is nothing short of memorable, a love letter to all the loyal fans out there. This game is definitely for you.
Inconsistent framerate aside, this is Street Fighter Alpha 2 in its entirety, and one definitely for the enthusiastic collector of all this capcom. Many were no doubt surprised when this heavy-weight of a game landed on an aging system. And for all intents and purposes this is street fighter, minus som drawn frames to help the SNES chug along at a forgiveable pace.
Definitely a gem, if not for the spot-on gameplay then for the sake of great games, and times, gone by.
Posted by: Kai on September 24, 2009, 9:58 am I don't agree with the statement that StreetFighter never really was a combo based games. When you see the tournaments of pro streetfighter players (e.g. EVO2009), you will see that combos are essential to win. (not only for the new SF-series, but also the old SF series)
