Game: Killer Instinct   |   Developers: Rareware   |   Year: 1995   |   Maximum No. Players: 2

Take a look around at the other fighting games available on the snes - most of them have a cartoony element to them somewhere. There is no such cuddly side to Killer Instinct - this game really tries its hardest to appear a lot rougher around the edges and is more comparable to the likes of the mortal kombat series. First lesson you will learn about this game is that you really have to practice if you are to be any good. This isn't a jump-and-kick affair - all the top players at this game all have a variety of combos at their disposal and killer instinct makes no habit of showing you how they're done!

Internet research is really the best way to go if you are going to find any respectable combos. I once had a long list of them in a GamesMaster magazine but that has long since departed. 20+ hit combos are far from uncommon and if you are on the recieving end of one, and are a newcommer to the game, you can basically just lie back for a minute until your opponent is finished!

The main difficulty with this game is, as you would imagine, the problem with actually getting into it at the start. It is very demoralising being pounded to a pulp with you only getting the odd feeble slab in. Do the research though, and take this word of advice - make the first thing you learn be the combo breakers - that will interrupt any combo if you keep a clear head and execute them properly. Bar that, though, there's not a lot newcomers can do except go off and make the moves themselves.

The game is exceptionally fast and hitting your opponnent off screen is a pretty common occurance. Couple with this the fact that you can still be hit with some moves when you're still in the air, it is actually possibly to 'juggle' your opponent. Let this not put you off though for there is a practice mode and it's a very rewarding game. Huge combos, lots of violence, lots of fatalities (including orchid flashing her breasts which apparently makes your eyes pop out of your head and kill you) and energy bars which carry over into the next round (I really like that touch) are but a few of the joys awaiting you within this game. Get it now and learn some moves before you play anybody decent and you too can compete in online gaming and get the crap kicked out of you. The game comes highly recommended for gamers who want lots of depth to their fighting games and who enjoys slaughtering opponents but less recommended for those of you who prefer slower paced, tactical fighting games.

Graphics

10/10
Very crisp graphics here which move about at an amazing speed, amazing backdrops and chromed fonts - what more can you ask for?
Difficulty

9/10
Quite tough on the harder difficulties - that eyedol one can be a sod - really you need to pick up some decent combos which start with a jumping attack to stand a chance.
Sound

10/10
Excellent music - I mean I think the original came with a 'killer cuts' cd so it's pretty good. The sound effects can be a bit crackly sometimes but the cool commentator compensates for that!
Playability

9/10
Brilliant to play but, as I have said about ninety times, hard to pick up and play. There is an awful lot of depth there though and plenty of gaming to get out of two player mode against an adequate opponent.

But it isn't. In my opinion it is superior to any mortal kombat game on the snes (well, except for ultimate MK3, maybe).

When you finish off an opponent starting from the middle of their life bar with a 48 hit combo you know this isn't a mortal kombat knock-off. The graphics
